From 19 to 30 December, Sri Lanka was affected by severe flooding in 22 of the country’s 25 districts. Handicap International is currently working to help vulnerable people in the district of Batticaloa, a district previously devastated by the tsunami in 2004.

HI implemented its first project in Sri Lanka almost thirty years ago, focusing on training rehabilitation professionals in Colombo and Jaffna. HI is currently implementing projects focused on rehabilitation and resilience to climate change and disaster risk reduction. The organization is working for other sectorial projects including economic inclusion, inclusion technical assistance and inclusive education project for 2025. 

Chad has over 17 million inhabitants, almost half of whom will be living below the national poverty line, according to the World Bank in 2023. Given the established correlation between poverty and disability, people with disabilities are over-represented among the most vulnerable groups. This fragile situation is exacerbated by conflicts in neighbouring countries and the impact of climate change.

HI worked in Guinea-Bissau between 2000 and 2006, and again from 2020 to March 2022. The organisation's last projects focused on inclusive education, to facilitate access to school for children with disabilities.

In Bolivia, HI is seeking to strengthen the inclusion in society of people with disabilities by facilitating access to rehabilitation care for young children and adolescents.

In Colombia, HI works in the fields of humanitarian demining, victim assistance and economic inclusion, and facilitates access to healthcare for Venezuelan refugees.

HI works to improve the inclusion of people with disabilities by seeking to ensure that children can go to school and adults can work and participate in community life. HI also provides rehabilitation care and helps communities build climate resilience. Our teams of deminers clear contaminated areas and others educate the population about the risks of explosive devices.
