At the start of the war in Syria, Hussein and his family left their home town to take refuge in Jordan. In the last few years, he has suffered from a series of medical complications. Thanks to Humanity & Inclusion's partnership with a local rehabilitation centre, the arthritis he suffers from in his knee is now managed by a team of physiotherapists.

On 5th and 6th December 2018, Humanity & Inclusion will organise a regional conference in Santiago, the capital of Chile, on protecting civilians from bombing. Twenty-six governments and some thirty civil society organisations and international NGOs will attend. The organisation hopes to raise awareness of this crucial issue and encourage States to take a stand against the use of explosive weapons in populated areas.

The Regional Conference on Protecting Civilians from the Use of Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas organized by HI, in Santiago, Chile, ended on 6 December. 23 States adopted the Santiago Communiqué expressing concern over the devastating impact on civilians of the use of explosive weapons in populated areas. Raja, from Yemen, is 13 years old. She was looking after the sheep in the mountains when she trod on a mine which exploded and threw her into the air.  Her leg was ripped off.

Twelve-year-old Zakarya is the eighth child of a poor family who live in a small village in northern Yemen. His life changed dramatically when he was injured in a rocket attack and doctors had to amputate his left leg.

Sina works as an occupational therapist at the Basma hospital rehabilitation centre in Jordan. Since HI set up a specialist paediatric unit for neurological disorders, she has been working with children with cerebral palsy.

Laos is one of the countries most heavily contaminated by explosive remnants of war in the world. HI’s weapons clearance teams on the ground are working to end this terrible threat to civilian lives. 

In Jordan, Humanity & Inclusion has helped 450 children with disabilities or developmental delay since July 2017. The parents of two-year-old Safaa, who has cerebral palsy, are among those who have benefited from its expertise.

More than 30 people were killed in the exchanges of rocket fire and airstrikes between Gaza and Israel over the weekend. In Gaza, this escalation of violence could lead to a new wave of injuries, with surgical and rehabilitation services already overwhelmed.  

A set of professional strategies and practical guidance published today aims to improve the inclusion of persons with disabilities in humanitarian aid delivery and ensure their participation.

On Monday 18th November at the United Nations in Geneva, States’ delegations, militaries, UN agencies and civil society are gathering to start discussions on a political declaration against the use of explosive weapons in populated areas.

On 3rd December, we celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Globally, people with disabilities continue to be excluded. Whether it’s accessing social services, health care, education, or a decent job, people with disabilities and disability rights advocates continue to fight for inclusion for all. Humanity & Inclusion’s teams work to ensure that people with disabilities are included in all aspects of life.

On 24th September, an earthquake struck Pakistan killing 40 people and injuring 900. Humanity & Inclusion’s team is on the ground, providing support to the most vulnerable.
 

The Fourth Review Conference for a Mine Free World, which HI participated in, closed on Friday 29 November in Oslo, Norway. State Parties to the Mine Ban Treaty adopted a five-year action plan to ensure mine clearance and other treaty obligations are met by 2025.
